Itinerary:

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Elevation: 1,640m to 2,850m
Hiking time: 5-7 hours
Distance: 11 km
Habitat: Rainforest
Start your adventure with a drive from Moshi to Machame Gate (1,640m). After registration, trek through the lush rainforest with the sounds of wildlife in the background. Enjoy the biodiversity as you ascend steadily to Machame Camp (2,850m), where you’ll spend the night.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Elevation: 2,850m to 3,850m
Hiking time: 4-6 hours
Distance: 5 km
Habitat: Moorland
Leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. Today’s trek involves a steeper ascent, giving you stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The trail leads to the Shira Plateau, where you will have a clear view of the summit in the distance. Overnight at Shira Camp (3,850m).

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,850m to 4,630m to 3,960m
Hiking time: 6-8 hours
Distance: 10 km
Habitat: Semi-desert
Today, acclimatization is key. Hike through a rocky and semi-desert landscape, ascending to Lava Tower (4,630m). After spending time at this altitude, descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m), where you’ll spend the night under the imposing Barranco Wall, a highlight for many climbers.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,960m to 4,035m
Hiking time: 4-5 hours

Start the day by climbing the Barranco Wall, a challenging but exhilarating scramble. From the top, enjoy expansive views before making your way through undulating terrain to Karanga Camp (4,035m). The day’s shorter hike allows more time for rest and acclimatization.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m

Habitat: Alpine Desert
A steady climb takes you to Barafu Camp (4,640m), your base for the summit attempt. As you arrive early, you’ll have time to rest and prepare for the final ascent. Go to bed early as the summit push begins just after midnight.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m to 3,100m
Hiking time: 12-15 hours
Distance: 17 km
Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest
Begin your summit trek around midnight, ascending through the dark, cold night with headlamps lighting the way. After reaching Stella Point (5,730m), continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa! After savoring the moment, begin the descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m), where you’ll spend your final night on the mountain.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m
Hiking time: 3-4 hours

Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive a summit certificate and say farewell to your team. A vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Moshi, where your incredible journey concludes.
