It is the only route offering dormitory-style hut accommodation instead of camping, making it appealing to those looking for a more comfortable experience. Though the Marangu Route is considered easier, the rapid ascent poses a challenge for acclimatization, so a 5-day climb requires good preparation.

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania

Arrival: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
Transfer: To your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for a pre-climb briefing and gear check with your guide. Relax and prepare for your upcoming adventure.
Overnight: Hotel in Arusha/Moshi.

Day 2: Marangu Gate (1,860m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate for registration. The trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush rainforest, filled with towering trees and rich vegetation. You might spot wildlife, such as colobus monkeys. After 4-5 hours, you will arrive at Mandara Hut, where you’ll rest for the night.

Day 3: Mandara Hut (2,700m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Today’s trek leaves the rainforest behind and enters the moorland zone, with rolling hills and open landscapes. You’ll hike past giant heathers and enjoy views of Mawenzi Peak as you make your way to Horombo Hut. The scenery changes dramatically, and you’ll begin to feel the altitude as you ascend.

Day 4: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Kibo Hut (4,703m)

Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
You will trek across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks, a desolate and stark landscape of alpine desert. The trail is rocky, with very little vegetation, and temperatures start to drop as you approach Kibo Hut. After arriving at Kibo in the afternoon, rest and prepare for your midnight summit attempt.

Day 5: Kibo Hut (4,703m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Distance: 21 km (8 km ascent, 13 km descent)
Hiking Time: 10-15 hours
Habitat: Arctic, then Alpine Desert and Moorland
At midnight, you’ll begin your ascent to the summit. The trail is steep and challenging, passing Hans Meyer Cave and reaching Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim. After a short rest, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m. The sense of achievement is overwhelming as you take in the sunrise and panoramic views.

After celebrating at the summit, you’ll descend back to Horombo Hut for a much-needed rest after a long, demanding day.

Day 6: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Marangu Gate (1,860m)

Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Moorland and Rainforest
The final day of your trek takes you back through the moorland and rainforest zones to Marangu Gate. After collecting your summit certificate, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi to relax and celebrate your achievement.
