Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,870m) to Mandara Hut (2,720m)

Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Description: After registration at the Marangu Gate, the trek begins through dense rainforest with a good chance of spotting Colobus monkeys. The trail is well-defined and provides a gentle ascent up to Mandara Hut, where you’ll spend the night.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Distance: 12 km (7 miles)
Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Description: Leaving the rainforest, you enter the moorland zone, where you’ll notice the vegetation thinning out. You will enjoy stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The trek is longer today but still gradual, taking you to Horombo Hut for overnight.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Distance: 9 km (5.5 miles)
Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Description: The trail ascends into the alpine desert. The path becomes more challenging as the altitude increases. You’ll cross the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo, a barren but beautiful landscape. You’ll reach Kibo Hut, where you will rest and prepare for the final ascent.

Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut

Distance: 22 km (13.7 miles)
Time: 10-14 hours
Habitat: Arctic zone to moorland
Description: You’ll begin the final push to the summit around midnight, following a challenging path to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. From here, it’s a gradual ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After reaching the summit, you’ll descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night.

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Distance: 20 km (12.5 miles)
Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Description: A final descent through the moorland and rainforest leads back to Marangu Gate. You’ll collect your certificate of completion, and your transport will be waiting to return you to your hotel.
