It’s less crowded compared to other routes, making it a top choice for trekkers seeking a more peaceful ascent. Starting from the western side of the mountain, the Lemosho Route gradually joins the Machame Route, offering stunning views of different ecosystems.

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania
Arrival: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
Transfer: To your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for an overnight stay. You’ll meet your guide for a pre-climb briefing, check your gear, and finalize preparations for your trek.
Overnight: Hotel in Arusha/Moshi.
Day 2: Londorossi Gate (2,250m) to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp (2,820m)
Distance: 7 km
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, you’ll drive to Londorossi Gate for registration. From here, a 4×4 vehicle will take you to the trailhead, where your trek begins. The hike starts in the lush rainforest, offering chances to see wildlife such as monkeys and exotic birds. You’ll reach Mti Mkubwa Camp in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight rest.

Day 3: Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m) to Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Today’s trek takes you out of the rainforest and into the moorland zone, with wide, open views of the mountain. The trail climbs steadily, and as you ascend, you’ll be able to see the vast Shira Plateau stretching out before you. Upon reaching Shira 1 Camp, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of Mount Meru and Kibo Peak.

Day 4: Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)
Distance: 7 km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Today is a relatively short and relaxing day. You’ll trek across the Shira Plateau, an expansive volcanic landscape with dramatic views of Kibo Peak and the western breach. This day is excellent for acclimatization, and you’ll reach Shira 2 Camp in the early afternoon, where you can explore the surrounding area or rest before the next day’s challenging hike.

Day 5: Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) to Lava Tower (4,630m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today’s trek follows the “climb high, sleep low” strategy to help with acclimatization. You’ll ascend to the Lava Tower at 4,630m, where you’ll stop for lunch. After acclimatizing at the high altitude, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp, passing through dramatic alpine desert landscapes. The descent into the Barranco Valley offers fantastic views of the Great Barranco Wall, which you will climb the next day.

Day 6: Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Distance: 9 km
Hiking Time: 7-9 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
You’ll start the day by scaling the Great Barranco Wall, a challenging but non-technical climb that provides breathtaking views of the Karanga Valley below. After crossing ridges and valleys, you’ll arrive at Barafu Camp, where you’ll prepare for the final ascent to the summit. Get an early dinner and rest, as your summit attempt will begin just after midnight.

Day 7: Barafu Camp (4,640m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,080m)
Distance: 19 km (5 km ascent, 14 km descent)
Hiking Time: 10-15 hours
Habitat: Arctic, then Alpine Desert and Rainforest
Around midnight, you’ll begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The climb is steep and challenging, passing through rocky terrain and ice fields. After reaching Stella Point (5,739m), you’ll make the final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.

Day 8: Mweka Camp (3,080m) to Mweka Gate (1,630m)
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
The final day of your trek is a relaxing descent through the lush rainforest, where you’ll encounter a variety of flora and fauna. After reaching Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate before driving back to your hotel for a well-deserved rest and celebration.

Day 9: Departure
After a night of rest, you’ll be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home or continue on with a safari or other Tanzanian adventure.
