7-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing Full Package (2025-2026)
The Machame Route is one of the most scenic and popular routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. This 7-day itinerary provides better acclimatization by offering a slower, more gradual ascent, increasing your chances of reaching the summit. You’ll experience diverse landscapes, from rainforests to alpine deserts and the stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s peaks.

Day by day itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania
Arrival: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
Transfer: To your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for relaxation. You’ll meet your guide for a pre-climb briefing, gear check, and final preparation.
Overnight: Hotel in Arusha/Moshi.
Day 2: Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (2,835m)
Distance: 11 km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, you’ll drive to Machame Gate for registration and the start of your climb. The trail ascends steadily through lush rainforest, with the possibility of encountering wildlife such as monkeys. You will reach Machame Camp in the late afternoon, where you can enjoy the misty views of the rainforest below.
Day 3: Machame Camp (2,835m) to Shira Camp (3,750m)
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Today’s trek takes you out of the rainforest and into the moorland zone, with wide-open views and rocky ridges. The trail steepens as you ascend, but you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of the Shira Plateau and Kibo Peak. You’ll camp at Shira Camp and have the opportunity to explore the plateau before resting for the night.
Day 4: Shira Camp (3,750m) to Lava Tower (4,630m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The trek today follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle to aid acclimatization. You will hike upwards to the Lava Tower (4,630m) and spend some time there before descending to Barranco Camp. The landscape changes from moorland to alpine desert, with views of the Western Breach and the Great Barranco Valley. Descending to Barranco Camp helps your body adjust to the altitude.
Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Start the day by tackling the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb. Once at the top, you’ll have breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and peaks. The trek then becomes easier as you make your way to Karanga Camp for a relaxing afternoon. This shorter day is important for acclimatization as you continue to adjust to the high altitude.

Day 6: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today’s trek takes you to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. The trail is relatively short, but the altitude makes it more challenging. You will reach Barafu Camp by early afternoon, where you’ll rest and prepare for the summit push later that night. Early dinner and rest are crucial before the final ascent.
Day 7: Barafu Camp (4,640m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Distance: 13 km
Hiking Time: 12-15 hours (6-8 hours to the summit, 5-7 hours descent)
Habitat: Arctic/Alpine Desert
You’ll start the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, around midnight. The trek up is long and strenuous, taking you through Stella Point (5,739m) before reaching the summit, Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After celebrating at the top, you’ll descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp for the night.
Day 8: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m)
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
On the final day, you’ll descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates. Afterward, you’ll be driven back to your hotel for a well-deserved rest and celebration.
