The Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 of the unique 5-Days Kilimanjaro Climbing via Marangu Route on 2025/2026-2027: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Elevation: 1,870 meters (6,135 ft) to 2,720 meters (8,923 ft)
Hiking Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Your journey starts at Marangu Gate, where you will register with the park authorities and meet your trekking team. The hike begins with a trek through the Montane Forest, a lush, green paradise teeming with wildlife, such as blue monkeys and a variety of bird species.

The trail is well-maintained and mostly gradual, making for an enjoyable introduction to the climb. After approximately 4-5 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Mandara Hut, where you’ll stay overnight in the comfortable A-frame huts. If time permits, a short hike to Maundi Crater offers stunning views over the Kenyan plains.

Day 2 of the unique 5-Days Kilimanjaro Climbing via Marangu Route on 2025/2026-2027: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 2,720 meters (8,923 ft) to 3,720 meters (12,205 ft)
Hiking Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Day 2 marks your departure from the dense rainforest into the moorland zone, where the scenery shifts to heathers, giant lobelias, and groundsels. The vegetation becomes more sparse as you gain altitude, with expansive views of Mawenzi Peak in the distance.

The path becomes more rocky and rugged, but it’s also one of the most scenic days as you trek toward Horombo Hut. You’ll spend the night here, and on a clear evening, both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are visible, creating an inspiring backdrop for the night.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Elevation: 3,720 meters (12,205 ft) to 4,703 meters (15,430 ft)
Hiking Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Leaving Horombo Hut, you ascend through the Alpine Desert, a barren, rocky landscape with little vegetation. The air is thinner, and the trek becomes more challenging, but the vast open space and the sight of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks in the distance are truly breathtaking.

You’ll cross the Saddle, a wide, arid plain between Mawenzi and Kibo, before reaching Kibo Hut, where you’ll rest in preparation for the midnight summit attempt. This is the most critical part of the climb, and trekkers are advised to sleep early and stay hydrated to prepare for the strenuous summit night.

Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then back to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 4,703 meters (15,430 ft) to 5,895 meters (19,341 ft) (Uhuru Peak), and then descend to 3,720 meters (12,205 ft)
Hiking Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles) (ascent and descent)
Hiking Time: 10-16 hours
Habitat: Arctic
Summit day begins at midnight, with an intense climb up to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa. The trek to the summit involves navigating steep switchbacks over loose scree. It is the most demanding part of the entire journey, both mentally and physically. Your first goal is to reach Gilman’s Point (5,685 meters / 18,651 ft), which is located on the crater rim.

From Gilman’s Point, it’s about 1-2 hours to the true summit, Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters / 19,341 ft). Upon reaching the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the glaciers, the vast plains of Tanzania, and beyond. After a short stay at the peak to capture photos and savor the accomplishment, you begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a rest.

After a brief break at Kibo, you’ll continue descending to Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend your final night on the mountain. The descent is long but exhilarating as you leave the cold summit behind and return to lower altitudes.

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Elevation: 3,720 meters (12,205 ft) to 1,870 meters (6,135 ft)
Hiking Distance: 20 km (12.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Moorland to Rainforest
On the last day of the trek, you descend from Horombo Hut back through the moorland and into the rainforest. The descent is rapid, and as you move through lower altitudes, you’ll feel the air become warmer and more humid.

Once you arrive at Marangu Gate, you’ll complete park formalities and collect your summit certificate—green for those who reached Gilman’s Point and gold for those who summited Uhuru Peak. Afterward, a vehicle will take you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where you can celebrate your incredible achievement.
