7-Day Machame Route Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
Arrival: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to your hotel in Moshi.
Briefing: Meet your guide for a pre-trek briefing, gear check, and overview of the journey.
Overnight Stay: Hotel in Moshi.
Day 2: Moshi (1,400m) – Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (3,000m)
Trekking Time: 6–7 hours | Distance: 11km
After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate for registration. Start the trek through the rainforest, enjoying lush greenery and wildlife sightings.
Overnight: Camping at Machame Camp.
Day 3: Machame Camp (3,000m) – Shira Camp (3,840m)
Trekking Time: 5–6 hours | Distance: 5km
Leave the rainforest behind as you climb into the moorland zone. The path gradually ascends to Shira Plateau with stunning views of the landscape.
Overnight: Camping at Shira Camp.
Day 4: Shira Camp (3,840m) – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Trekking Time: 6–7 hours | Distance: 10km
Today, hike up to Lava Tower, the highest point so far, for essential acclimatization. Afterward, descend to Barranco Camp, offering stunning views of the Great Barranco Wall.

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,960m) – Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours | Distance: 5km
Start the day with a climb up the Barranco Wall. Though challenging, it’s a rewarding climb with breathtaking views. The trail then continues through alpine desert toward Karanga Camp.
Overnight: Camping at Karanga Camp.
Day 6: Karanga Camp (4,035m) – Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours | Distance: 4km
Climb gradually toward Barafu Camp, where you will prepare for your summit attempt. The afternoon is for resting and gathering strength for the midnight climb.
Overnight: Camping at Barafu Camp.
Day 7: Barafu Camp (4,640m) – Summit (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,080m)
Summit Attempt: Begins at midnight | Trekking Time: 6–8 hours to Uhuru Peak
Descent: 5–7 hours to Mweka Camp | Total Distance: 17km
Begin your final ascent under the stars, aiming to reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise. Celebrate reaching the Roof of Africa and take in the awe-inspiring views. After a short rest, descend back to Barafu for a break, then continue to Mweka Camp.
Overnight: Camping at Mweka Camp.
Day 8: Mweka Camp (3,080m) – Mweka Gate (1,640m) – Moshi
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours | Distance: 10km
Complete the descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Upon receiving your summit certificate, you will be transferred back to Moshi for a well-deserved rest.
Overnight Stay: Hotel in Moshi.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your return flight.
